balans at table

The Variable Balans encourages movement and supports the body through each movement made. Body and chair, action and reaction, in a cycle of continuous motion that energizes and enlivens the body and mind. Not only does it make you comfortable, it makes you feel good. After 30 years, the Peter Opsvik balans concept has become a classic. Considered "the Original Kneeling chair", the Varier Variable Balans chair has become the benchmark for all kneeling chair designs. The Variable Balans was originally manufactured by Stokke and was known as the Stokke Variable Balans chair. Several years ago the Stokke company decided to divide its brand and the Balans concept and designs were transferred to the Varier name.

As versatile in design as in concept, the Variable Balans is the perfect instrument for the ever-changing demands of today's work places and lifestyles. Work becomes a breeze as the upright, "alert" posture promotes concentration and activity.

The benefits are not just for adults, as the posture, breathing, and energy enhancements of active sitting have been directly correlated with improved homework performance in adolescents.

Humans were created to move, not to sit still.

"I believe that the spine is happiest when it can adopt the natural curvature that it has when we stand upright" -Peter Opsvik

Recent studies show that the human body operates to its fullest potential when allowed to remain fluid and open. Actually, there has never been any scientific evidence that can support the Western upright seating style is "correct". The angle of the knees and pelvis should be opened, allowing freedom of movement and circulation.

The Varier Variable Balans helps to achieve just that. Forward-sloped seats on curved runners support the body in a seated, kneeling position. This allows the angle between the thighs and torso to increase, allowing the body to naturally adopt the same spine curvature as when standing, relieving pressure from the vertebrae and letting you breathe more deeply and freely.

The Variable Balans promotes constant natural movement, keeping the back and abdominal muscles active at all times. While sitting, the user is actually strengthening the core muscles of the abdomen and back while preventing tension in the neck and shoulders.

Some seating options also incorporate a backrest that is ideal for extended periods of tasking that requires the user to be seated. Tilt forward for labor-intensive activities, and rock back for relaxation breaks. Regardless of the position, the spine will always be supported perfectly.

This "active sitting" improves circulation and oxygen levels, boosting energy, concentration, and overall well-being.

Upholstery and Finish Options

Ergo Depot stocks the largest selection of Variable Balans chairs in North America. Below we have included a list of upholsteries that we have in stock. Please note that monitor settings can vary greatly and we encourage all clients to request free upholstery samples to insure the correct upholstery and color are ordered.

Variable Back (Optional)

The optional Variable Balans back is ideal for users that will be spending extended periods of time in their chair. The back is easily removed and installed and is available in all four finish options.

Extension Block (Optional)

The optional extension block is a small, non-upholstered insert that reduces the distance between the seat and knee pads. This option is ideal for children or shorter adult users. The extension block is easily installed and is available for quick ship.

Soft Tape (Optional)

Soft tape is recommended for chairs that will be used on wood floors or other hard surfaces. The tape easily attaches to the bottom of the chair and helps to protect both the chair and the floor during use. Soft tape is in stock and available for quick-ship orders.

Best money I have spent in a long time May 25, 2015
Reviewer: Happy Customer from Surrey, England UK
I purchased this in March 2015. I work from home and I spend long days at a desk and to try to help my back from the rigors of bad posture day in day out, I stepped up my exercise regime last year and worked part of the day standing.
Looking back I was a bit concerned if  I could easily adapt to it. I bought it thinking I would just have to persevere with it and I could not have been more wrong..it was like finding my perfect sitting position from the first moment and discovering why my back had been such a problem for so long "I was sitting all wrong and for 12 hours sometimes a day". I adore this piece of furniture my back is still not perfect but a 1000% better than it was and the most surprising discovery of all was when I first assembled it there is no way I would have given it any marks for beauty, but Ive grown to love it for adding such a great  contemporary vibe to my environment!
I give it 5 stars for design, comfort and value.

Balans Variable July 21, 2013
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from Clemson South Carolina
This chair saved my life. After a back attack in 1982 and 18 months of painful rehab, my wife found this chair in a curiosity shop (which no longer exists) and we got it. My back has been good since then, solely because the only chair I sit in is this one---I've got one in the home, one in the office. If your knees are strong and your back weak, this may be the chair for you!

Great Chair! March 2, 2013
Reviewer: Jill from Texas
I bought the chair after a couple of decades hovering over an office desk.  After a couple of weeks, I found my posture improved and my core muscles stronger.  It was tiring at first but now I love it.  I would highly recommend the backrest and look forward to the new pad for it.  The guys at ergodepot were great to work with as well.  Very responsive to my questions.  My only regret is not buying one years ago!

Exactly What I Needed June 28, 2012
Reviewer: Joe from Birmingham, AL
I had tried a friend's kneeling chair in college and liked the concept.   Now that I'm 20 yrs older and work in front of a computer for 10 hrs a day, the pains of static sitting were taking a toll.   So I began researching the various options and 4 months ago, I purchased the Variable Balans with backrest from ergodepot.  Excellent service from this company. Chair arrived in two days!

Extremely well made and simple...less than 30 minutes to assemble.  I used for 3 months and I love it. Your body craves movement; the Variable Balans allows this to happen.   I’m 5' 9" and 180lbs and am much more agile around my desk than when I sat in a standard rolling desk chair!  At day's end, my body is not tired or sore.  Posture is better and I'm more alert and productive at the office. Also noticed an improvement in reflux issues.
In closing, the Variable Balans is the real deal...it's not cheap but its high quality design and materials will not let you down!

Nothing would make me change the chair again March 14, 2011
Reviewer: Eda
After I first was not sure about kneeling position, I was shown that changing position is key and that kneeling is just one of many positions. I bought this chair with backrest and I'm now a fan and NOTHING would make me use an ordinary chair ever again!! I LOVE it and will be doing a piece in the womens magazine that I am working for singing its praises.
